2013 ({V})Warrior Announced!

Being a Vagina Warrior “means developing the spiritual muscle to enter and survive the grief that violence brings and, in that dangerous space of stunned unknowing, inviting the deeper wisdom.” – Eve Ensler

Petaluma resident Lori Burleson has been chosen as V-Day Petaluma’s 2013 Vagina Warrior.  This recognition honors a person of any gender identification who embodies the spirit of equality and empowerment and assists in the effort to end violence against women and girls.

Sisters Lori & Kim

Following the tragic intimate partner related death of her sister Kim Baucom Conover last Spring, Lori began speaking out on domestic violence in an effort to educate and raise awareness of the support available to victims, so that similar tragedies may be avoided.  A strong supporter of Guided to Safety, Lori has spoken at several events including the Petaluma Fabulous Women’s Let’s Face It” to share a bit of Kim’s story. Her hope is that by speaking out at least one person or one family will not have to go through what hers has gone through.  Lori also accepted the honor of being the keynote speaker for the Sonoma County Family Justice Center’s one-year anniversary celebration this past October.

A graduate of Petaluma High School and the University of San Francisco, she holds a degree in Organizational Behavior. Lori is a natural people person and public speaker by profession, and is the Human Resources Manager for Legacy Marketing Group in Petaluma, where she has enjoyed her employment there for the last 17 years. In that role, she actively spearheads charitable activities, raising funds for several non-profits in the area, including Catholic Charities of Santa Rosa, COTS, the Red Cross, and the Salvation Army.  A mother of two and grandmother of one, Lori is also enjoying her expanded role of dedicated aunt to Kim’s teen daughters and two-year old twins.

Past ({V})Warrior honorees: Val Richmond, former ED of Mentor Me Petaluma; Michelle Doyel, DV/SA Victim Advocate; Todd Siders, CGHS teacher;  Helen Grieco, ED of BRAVE People; and Haley Baird, 2012 graduate of CGHS.

Congratulations, Lori Burleson!
